Ghana an overview

The country Ghana derivied its name from the ancient Ghana Empire which means Warrior King. The country is bordered by Burkina Faso in the north, Togo in the East, Ivory Coast in the west and the Gulf of Guinea in the south. Initially the Ghana was a colony of Portugese and then became the British Colony and was named as Gold Coast Crown Colony. The Gold Coast acheived independence from the United Kingdom in the year 1957 and became the first sub-Saharan African nation to be so and the name Ghana was chosen as the country's new name.

Ghana is a member of the South Atlantic peace and Cooperation Zone, the Commonwealth nations, the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union and is also an associate member of La Francophonie.

The world's largest artificial lake Lake Volta is in Ghana.

Ghana is the second largest producer of Cocoa in the world.

The capital of Ghana - Accra and is also the largest city of Ghana.
