Maha Mrithyunjaya Mantra

Along with Gayathri Mantra, the Mahamrithyunjaya mantra - which means death conquering mantra, is a verse of rigveda. This is also called as Trayambakam mantra. This Mantra was found or formed by Rishi Markandeya. Legend says that this is a secret mantra and only Markandeya Rishi knew it. It came to light when he gave it to Sati Devi to help to cure the curse on the moon by King Daksha.
This Mrithyunjaya Mantra is dedicated to Rudra, referring to the furious aspect of Shiva. It is also refferred to as life-restoring mantra.

Om tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pushti-vardhanamurvarukam iva bandhanan mrutyormukiya mamrutat

The meaning of the mantra is O three eyed one, I meditate upon you; you are the one who increases the nourishment and fragrance in every thing. Free us from death, disease and all bondage and give us immortality.
