Akshaya Trithiyai

What is Akshayam?
Akshayam is generally related to growth. The general usage of this can be seen in Akshya Pathram, Akshaya Trithiyai, Akshaya Vatam......

Which is day is called as Trithiyai?
The third day after the new moon day or full moon day is called as Trithiyai. All the tamil months of Chitirai, Vaikasi, Aani, Aadi, Aavani, Puratasi, Aipasi, Karthigai, Margazhi, Thai, Maasi and Panguni have trithiyai, but the trithiyai that comes in the month of Chitirai after the New Moon day is so special and is called Akshaya Trithiyai. On every Trithiyai, it is regarded auspicious to look at the moon.

Though in the recent days, people have started buying gold and silver and also platinum on this day, it is said that if you start anything new on this day, it is sure to give back in lots. (I would prefer to follow, do your duty and donot expect returns). There is a small story behind this; While in Dwaraka, Krisha's clothes were washed off by the river flood and he was unable to come out of the river and Draupadi, who is his cousin, was passing by saw his plight and tore a piece of her saree and asked him to wear it and come out of the river. As a gratitude of thanks, Krisha sent Draupadi, meters and meters of cloth when she asked for his help in the Rajya Sabha.

The most important thing one can do on this day, is rather than buying something in gold or silver or platinum, donate something to the needy. The best donation or Daanam is Anna Dhaanam, donating food.

So let us follow that instead of falling for the advertisements made by the shop keepers.
